Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a group of genetic disorders that affect the retina’s ability to respond to light, leading to a gradual loss of vision.

Symptoms:

Retinitis Pigmentosa symptoms can vary but generally worsen over time.

  • Night blindness: Difficulty seeing in low light or darkness
  • Tunnel vision: Loss of peripheral vision while central vision remains
  • Gradual vision loss: Slow progression of vision impairment
  • Light sensitivity: Discomfort or pain in bright light
  • Difficulty with color vision

Causes:

Retinitis Pigmentosa is caused by genetic mutations.

  • Genetic inheritance: Inherited in an autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, or X-linked manner
  • Family history: Having family members with RP increases risk
