Diabetic Retinopathy

What is diabetic retinopathy (DR)?

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the back of the eye (retina) caused by complications of diabetes, which can eventually lead to blindness. Diabetic retinopathy can develop in anyone who has type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. The longer you have diabetes and the less controlled your blood sugar is, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy.

Self-Schedule a Screening

Symptoms:

There may be no symptoms in the early stages. As the disease progresses, you may start to experience:

  • Spots or dark strings floating in your vision (floaters)
  • Blurred vision
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Dark or empty areas in your vision
  • Vision loss
  • Difficulty with color perception

Causes:

Blood vessels in the retina swell due to blood sugar fluctuations. These can leak fluid and eventually close. To compensate, your retina will grow abnormal, fragile blood vessels which will not give your retina the proper amount of blood flow for healthy vision.

  • Blood Sugar Fluctuations
  • Fluid Leakage and Closure
  • Abnormal Blood Vessels Growth
  • Inadequate Blood Flow

Testing & Diagnosis:

Azul Vision has recently collaborated with Digital Diagnostics to provide quick Diabetic Retinopathy Screenings to you! Through this exciting collaboration, we look forward to utilizing the LumineticsCore™ system, an FDA-cleared AI-based diagnostic tool formerly known as IDx-DR. This advanced technology is specifically designed to detect diabetic retinopathy, including macular edema, a leading cause of blindness associated with diabetes.
